The Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation is dedicated to providing essential life-saving equipment and training needed by the Hawaii Fire Department (HFD), and honoring our heroes, here on the Big Island of Hawaii. We feel that meeting this need is something that all of us, as a community, have an obligation to meet.
We are a 501(C) 3 non-profit organization. For our first ten years, we were under the umbrella of the Hawaii Community Foundation. Thanks to our generous Hawaii Community, we have grown to the point that in 2007 we obtained our own individual non-profit status. This helps us to get the needed equipment and training to the Fire Department more quickly and ensure they are receiving what will help them the most. We work closely with the Fire Chief, Battalion Chiefs; EMS, Ocean Safety, Fire and Rescue Station Captains to determine these needs each year.
The Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation has raised over $3.5 million to date, 100% of these donations have been dedicated to rescue equipment and training for the Hawaii Fire Department, including grants from the Ironman Foundation, County of Hawaii Shipper's Wharf Grant, Bank of Hawaii, Young Brothers, An Anonymous Family Foundation, The Atherton Family Foundation, The Dorrance Family Foundation, The Schwab Fund for Charitable Giving, The Kona Mauka Rotary Club and The Rotary Club of North Hawaii.
How it Started
The Foundation was started in 1997 when the Sayres lost their son in a hiking accident and experienced first-hand the heroism and perilous nature of the work that the Hawaii Fire Department experiences on a regular basis. After the accident the Sayres discovered that much of the risk to Fire Department Personnel could have been avoided if the Fire Department had the equipment they needed.
The Need
The Sayres started the Foundation to support our exceptional Hawaii Fire Department by providing the equipment and training needed that is beyond their budget. As you are surely aware, we live in an era of cutbacks and budget constraints. Unfortunately the HFD is no exception. The Hawaii Fire Department’s budget cannot keep up with the increasing population and need on our Island for new and improved equipment and training.
Sponsorship
Your Sponsorship will help us to pay for the administrative expenses that it now takes to run the Foundation. In past years, the Sayres have paid for this themselves. The tremendous growth and success of the Foundation has made it apparent that it is now time to hire a part-time Executive Administrator to help write grant applications and to oversee the continual growth of this Foundation. We invite you to partnership with us as we work together to save lives in Hawaii through the support to our Hawaii Fire Department.
In Appreciation of Your Support
To show our appreciation of your Sponsorship we will provide you with the following: List your Company Name on our Website Sponsor’s Page, in addition to our printed program and in our PowerPoint Presentation that runs during the dinner portion of our program. If you would like, we can also use your logo and list Contact Information for your Company.
